Unnecessary Violence

Unnecessary Violence

Summary

Recently, an American woman named Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. Her death has sparked controversy among the American public. For those who are against ICE, the killing of an unarmed mother of three demonstrates the dangers of an unrestrained Trump regime. On the other side, many believe that such violence was justified as self-defence against a woman who tried to escape from a law enforcement officer. The government, not surprisingly, sides with ICE, since it is the department responsible for executing Trump's grand vision of purging 'illegal immigrants' within the country. The Department of Homeland Security called Good a 'violent rioter', who was responsible for committing domestic terrorism. Polls show that a majority of Americans disapprove of how ICE has been deployed and the way they manage situations. Many worry that they are not trained to prevent violent escalations. A poll conducted soon after the shooting found that about 52 per cent of respondents disapproved of how ICE handles its job. Some believe that such use of violence is a turning point for Trump's regime, where democracy degenerates into authoritarian madness. We need to understand that law enforcement exists to secure the well-being of citizens, safeguarding them from threats within and without. Yet, their very purpose of existence is abandoned when law enforcement officers become the very thing they vow to fight against. More importantly, their mismanagement undermines the government's political legitimacy and erodes the public trust necessary for effective governance.
