Tightrope Walking

Tightrope Walking

Summary

Singapore is assessing an invitation from the United States to join President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace”, a US-led body initially mandated to oversee Gaza’s post-war reconstruction but now framed as a broader mechanism for resolving global conflicts. Invitations have reportedly been sent to around 60 countries, with some confirming participation and many others remaining cautious, while provisions allowing indefinite membership in exchange for a US$1 billion contribution have further fuelled controversy. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that it did not seek a seat and is carefully evaluating the offer. This is consistent with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan’s stance that Singapore prefers to contribute quietly and constructively rather than pursue high-profile roles.

Application

The invitation places Singapore in a delicate position, exemplifying political tightrope walking. Declining to join risks straining ties with Washington at a time when Singapore places high strategic value on a strong relationship with the US as a key security and economic partner. Yet accepting the invitation could unsettle regional neighbours, some of whom are sceptical of US-led interventionism and critical of Washington’s close alignment with Israel. For a small state whose foreign policy hinges on neutrality, credibility, and balanced relations among major powers, either choice carries diplomatic costs.
