Inclusivity in Sports

Inclusivity in Sports

Summary

In Singapore, a volunteer-led team has transformed dragon boat racing into an inclusive sport for amputees and stroke survivors by redesigning what previously did not exist. Through the Alita Initiative, para-athletes, engineers, clinicians, and volunteers collaborated to create customised seats, adaptive paddle attachments, and rigorous safety protocols from scratch. Co-founded by quadruple amputee Tan Whee Boon, the effort enabled more than 30 paddlers with significant physical impairments to train and compete safely, fostering recovery, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging

Application

More broadly, this demonstrates how technology can advance equity and dignity. By redesigning tools and systems around human differences, innovation helps dismantle the dominance hierarchy that physical ability often creates in sport. When technology is applied inclusively, it does not dilute competition; it expands access, allowing more people to participate on meaningful terms and reframing sport as a space where teamwork, resilience, and shared purpose matter as much as physical strength.
