Chinamaxxing

Summary

A viral social media trend known as “Chinamaxxing” has seen many Gen Z users, particularly in the West, adopting everyday Chinese habits such as drinking hot water, eating congee, and following traditional practices, sparking both curiosity and debate about cultural appreciation. While some view the trend as a grassroots way of increasing cultural awareness and China’s soft power by showcasing ordinary aspects of daily life, others warn that it risks reducing complex traditions to superficial symbols and overlooking the discrimination faced by Chinese communities. Experts note that although the trend may open doors to cross-cultural understanding and dialogue, its meme-driven, short-lived nature makes it uncertain whether such interest will translate into deeper, long-term shifts in perception or meaningful engagement.

Application

The “Chinamaxxing” trend can be read through the lens of orientalism, though it does not automatically fall into that category. Orientalism, a concept associated with Postcolonial Studies and articulated by Edward Said, describes the tendency to portray Asian cultures as exotic, simplified, and fundamentally “other.” When cultural practices such as drinking hot water or eating congee are treated as aesthetic novelties or reduced to quirky stereotypes, they risk becoming detached from their deeper social and historical meanings, echoing orientalist patterns. Yet whether the trend is truly orientalist ultimately depends on the attitude with which it is approached. If individuals engage with these practices merely as spectacle or entertainment, the result may reinforce caricatures and superficial understandings. However, if the same behaviours stem from curiosity, respect, and a desire to understand the culture more deeply, they function instead as forms of cultural appreciation. The distinction therefore lies less in the act itself and more in the mindset behind it: the same trend can either flatten a culture into symbols or open a path toward genuine cross-cultural understanding.
